Ian M. Purcell, M.D., Ph.D
Dr. Ian Purcell strives towards the development of a world class Vestibular and Balance Institute. He currently practices clinical Neurology with an additional focus in OtoNeurology and Headache management. Dr. Purcell started by enrolling in the combined M.D./Ph.D. program in Neuroscience at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston in September of 1989. In September 1991 he entered the Vestibular Neurophysiology Laboratory of Adrian A. Perachio, Ph.D. and received a total of six years of funding from the NASA Graduate Training Grant and The Texas Space Grant Consortium as a principal investigator. As a neurophysiologist, aviator, and Russian jet warbird enthusiast, he is very interested in providing insight as to how sensory information related to gravity is encoded and processed by the vestibular system to control oculomotor and postural reflexes as well as spatial orientation of the human body moving through a complex three-dimensional environment. Dr. Purcell is involved in the innovation of many new vestibular technologies and actively publishes research articles on the vestibular system. He continues to remain at the forefront of diagnosing and treating vestibular dysfunction.

She is dedicated to being at the forefront of technology, understanding the latest advancements in neurologic diseases, and keeping a patient centered approach with exceptional care. A native of Chicago, Dr. Patel has received many honors and distinctions. She graduated with high honors and on the Dean’s List from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she received her undergraduate degree in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics and graduated from the Honors Program in Engineering & Medicine. She obtained her medical degree from the Chicago Medical School, and was selected as the Student Dean. Dr. Patel completed her internship in Internal Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, and was recognized amongst the top of her class as a “Resident of the Year.” She completed her residency training in Neurology at Temple University Hospital, where she served as Chief Resident. She has an interest in teaching, and has been invited to lecture to resident & student groups. Dr. Patel is committed to understanding the latest research in Neurology. Her goal is to continue rising to the challenges of an ever changing healthcare system as the spectrum of modern medicine neurology has and will occupy a place of prominence.
Touraj Yari, PA-C, MPAS,
Touraj Yari is a licensed Physician Assistant in California and certified by the NCCPA. Touraj completed his Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He then spent several years training in emergency medicine as a certified EMT in San Diego. He completed the Physician Assistant program at Western University of Health Sciences where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and as a member of the Alpha Eta Honor Society.
Touraj began his work in the field of otoneurology by contributing to many of the protocols used in the clinic today with regards to vestibular testing, which has provided him a well-rounded perspective as a provider when approaching treatment of vertigo, dizziness and other vestibular disorders. Touraj has continued his passion of diagnosing and treating vertigo by taking part in the research and development team that continues to be in the center of cutting edge otoneurologic equipment, and by traveling internationally to locations including China, where he has educated medical staff about vestibular dysfunction.
Touraj Yari is also certified to complete and interpret Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCV), which allows him to better understand and manage severe cervical or lumbar radiculopathies, peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome and other disorders of the nerves.
Our staff are all encouraged to participate in activities that help them further understand balance complaints. These activities include Skydiving, Flying Jetpacks, and Performing Aerobatics in Dr. Purcell's Stearman aircraft.

Nhi Yari, MAMedical Assistant
Nhi Tran is a graduate of SDSU and joined the team in November of 2013. Her experience in Communications and interest in Neurology allows her to thrive in patient interaction and complex neurological cases. She has experience with the diagnosis of viral labyrinthitis and works well to ensure the quick treatment of these cases. She has already interviewed and assisted in the diagnostic work up of over 5,000 vertigo patients.
Nina Acebo, MAMedical Assistant
Nina Acebo is a 2019 graduate from UC San Diego with a degree in Human Biology and Language Studies, with a concentration in American sign language. She is planning to pursue either Medical School of P.A. School in the future.
Iris Tso, MTMedical Technician
Iris Tso graduated from UC San Diego with a major in Biochemistry. She is currently applying to P.A. programs. Her comprehension of the vestibular apparatus enables her to identify vestibular disorders such as BPPV. She is trained in performing videonystagmograph (VNG) and vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) testing, which helps identify peripheral vestibulopathies.
Wei Gan, MTMedical Technician
Wei Gan graduated from UCSD with a degree in Biochemistry and Cell biology in 2018. He is currently in the process of completing his post graduate studies before preparing to apply for graduate school. His specialty within the clinic involves evaluation of the motor and sensory nerves within the human body, which allow him to identify nerve disorders such as neuropathy and spinal stenosis through nerve conduction and electromyography testing.
Bryan Gonzalez, MTMedical Technician
Bryan Gonzalez works in the clinic as a medical technician and started in February 2014. He performs testing including videonystamographs, computerized dynamic posturography, and treatments on the Epley Chair and G-force system. In the future, he looks forward to fulfilling his dream of joining the military and serving our country.
